Nataraj is the dancing form of Shiva, whose ecstatic dance, or tandava, keeps the universe in motion. It is said that if Nataraj stops even for a moment, all shall cease to exist. In this beading, Nataraj is adorned with coiling cobras which symbolize awakened kundalini (life force) energy. In his upper right hand, Nataraj carries the damaru (the hand drum said to have made the first sounds of creation) and in his upper left hand holds agni (the fire which can destroy the universe). With his lower right hand, Nataraj makes the gesture of Abhaya mudra which represents protection, and dispelling of fear. With his damaru, Nataraj beats the rhythm of forward motion, and through agni, Nataraj consumes old patterns to make way for change and new possibility.
